New Garmin ConnectIQ app for PowerPod and AeroPod

Post by Velocomp »

We have just posted the new "Velocomp" ConnectIQ app for PowerPod and AeroPod.

The Velocomp ConnectIQ app replaces our current AeroPod2.0 and AeroPod CdA apps.

The Velocomp app is compatible with an extremely wide variety of Garmin devices. It is designed for PowerPod and AeroPod products and has these new features:

1) The Velocomp app now guides you through the cal ride, with messages telling you what to do and when to do it. No more looking at the status light on your device!

2) There is a screen designed exclusively for PowerPods. This screen will appear automatically whenever your Garmin is connected to a PowerPod

3) There is a screen designed exclusively for AeroPods. This screen will appear automatically whenever your Garmin is connected to an AeroPod

Instructions for downloading, installing, and using the Velocomp app are attached.

Version 1.0.1 of Velocomp has been released, improving the cal ride support and to add "power" to the AeroPod screen.

John -

If I am using a PP, but all options are unlocked and I am also using a DFPM - does the new IQ app enable the details as if it were an AP?

Thanks,

Tom

I think so; if the app detects a DFPM then it shows the AP screen

Is it possible to "configure" the fields?

Like selecting each one in on-off mode...for example, power yes, cda no, slope yes , wind no.

Also the font size, as actually the fonts are "small" inside each field... a lot of space unused.

thanks

I noticed that if you have the data for this IQ app displayed while running a calibration, the display gives directions about the out and back, reminding to stop at 50% and turn around. During that time the display does not show the wind/slope and so on.

There also appears to be a thin bar at the bottom of the Garmin screen that grows to the entire width as the ride progresses to the end of the ride. With all that, it would be nice if this screen did the COUNT UP (0->100) while doing this ride, since the thin line at the bottom is hard to see. Also, the font flips around in size during all of this.

We don't show slope and wind numbers during calibration, because the purpose of the cal ride is to calibrate those sensors.

We will investigate your other suggestions. Thanks!

Not surprising that the IQ app does not show any ride data while in calibration. I was really remarking on the fact that it was displaying some basics about the cal process itself. Which, by the way, was actually nice to stumble onto as I had not read about the feature and I have sometimes not had my Garmin showing in other screens the count-up to 100 during a cal ride.

If I had read all the directions for the new app, I would have seen the details about pre-cal ride messages...oops.

Can you tell us what device you're using, and how you've configured the Velocomp data field (ie is it full screen, or some smaller area)?

The "thin line at the bottom" is supposed to be a solid bar, and very easy to see (and it is on the devices I've tested) - so it sounds like something needs tweaking for your setup.

This is on a Garmin Edge 1050.

The Aero IQ app is using the entire screen as it is supposed to be setup. I had deleted the previous rendition of the AP IQ app and updated to version 2.x.

When the AP is in calibration mode the text explaining the out/back starts out in relatively small text. At the turn around point it gets a bit larger. All the while there is a thin line at the bottom - not a thick bar - more like using the "___________" underline from the keyboard.

As I recall, the 1050 can sometimes act differently for some of these utilitiy apps.

Here's what it should look like (according to Garmin's simulator - I don't have a real Edge-1050 to try it on):

Clearly there's plenty of space for a bigger bar, so I'll tweak things to increase the size on bigger screens - but I'm guessing it doesn't look like this on the actual device.

Can you send a picture? No need to force a cal ride, just a picture of the "searching" screen will do since the bar is identical in both cases. So just turn on the Edge when the AeroPod is turned off, and it should show you a screen with "Searching" at the top, and the bar at the bottom.

If you don't need the "Laps" display, it's actually designed to work with a variety of configurations. I have two separate Garmin profiles on my Edge-1030, one has it configured full screen for doing "P4 lap" rides, the other is configured like this (it's a 7-field layout, with 2 "single" cells at the top, 4 "single" cells at the bottom, and a 2x2 cell where I've placed the Velocomp field) - which lets me add 6 data fields around it. With the bigger screen, the 1050 probably has several viable options to choose from.

I just fired up the Garmin and opened the screen for the AP/IQ.

See attached. I have not run the calibrate as you suggested just the search is showing and the bar progresses across the Botton while doing the search

What happens after the AP is found might be a different story and where the sizing shifts around. Maybe this is some software auto format or auto-size phenomena?

Yes - increasing the bar size would be useful. And as far as the text - I think is changes font size during the cal ride and changes again at the end of the first 50%.

It is too messy outside to try a ride and actually pay attention to what I see while in the data capture for calibration. I'll try to cary the layout when I get that far.

Thanks.

I think it's just that the 1050 has a similar sized screen to the 1030, but much higher resolution, so the bar ends up being much smaller. I'll adjust the bar height based on the screen size.

Since the instructions have to fit on many different sized screens - from the fr230 up to things like your edge-1050 - I have heuristics that try to pick the largest font that will let the text fit into the given area. So yes, longer messages can end up with smaller font sizes.

For the 1050 in full screen mode, the biggest font should work for everything, but I can see that it does in fact use a smaller font for some of the longer messages - even though they fill less than half the screen. I'll see if I can improve the font selection...

I just uploaded v1.0.2, which should give more consistent font sizing, and also increases the height of the progress bar on bigger screens.

Thanks for working through this little issue.

I was very happy to see that this provides a working solution to the calibration phase, too.! The Garmin does not always show the Watts count-up during calibration (it seems to depend on whihc screen I have displayed during this process.) Having a screen that is linked to the AP is quite useful.
