flashes and re-finds cadence, HR and speed

Post by rogerthepilot »

When hitting chip seal roads, my iPro Gen III repeatedly starts flashing the top digits and eventually displays it has found Heart Rate, Speed and Cadence. I have replaced the battery in the remote receiving mount.
Why is it doing this? What is the cure?

It sounds like your iBike battery is losing contact with the electrodes within the grey shell.

Try stuffing a piece of paper between your battery and your battery door. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

I fitted in a piece of paper to provide a tighter fit for the battery as you suggested. The same malady manifests itself of loosing display data and in very short order the iPro stopped working with the exception of a slope angle display occassionally going up a steep hill. It was raining. I did have a wirless fail display. The iPro would not work after that.

I never had any trouble with the wireless receiver with the Gen II IBike...I am competing in Ironman Canada in 2 weeks and need a quick resolution I'm afraid.

Thoughts on a resolution? Roger

I have replaced the wireless receiving unit battery with a medical quality battery which tested above 300 when temporarily installed in my iPro for purposes of battery testing. We'll see how this battery works in the wireless receiving unit.

Please upload the 402 firmware, which includes improvements in the handling of wireless sensor messages.

If you still have problems after this please email atimmer@velocomp.com for technical support.

Roger...is the unit getting water or more importantly sweat between the unit and the mount? Is it placed directly beneath your head?

I am just curious as I was having the exact same issues on any rides over an hour long...it turns out that the gasket in my unit was broken ... John and Company were able to fix it very quickly - about a week turnaround...and I rode the IMC course yesterday - 6 hours and not a single issue - and I rode through some light drizzle and sweat off my head. Looks like the issue was resolved for me...so I hope it is something similar for you?

If you think this could be the issue - take a picture of the area on the unit where the gasket is - and fire it off to Aaron (the email that John has already provided). When I had my Gen II unit available - all I did was put tape around the area where it attaches to the mount to stop water/sweat from getting in there...worked fine as a temporary solution.

Good luck and see you in 2 weeks!

Cheers!

I have tonight installed the 4.02 firmware in the GenIII iPro. I have attached the file from today's ride which seems to have many faults in the file i.e. zero distance and 3000 watt scale in display window for iBike 3.0 for Windows.

The paper in the battery compartment apparently wasn't a fix. The new battery apparently wasn't a fix either. The brass contacts are wearing away to nothing.

I will attempt to make this fix work. My frustration level is high as you might imagine with Ironman 11 days away.

I experience two 'speed fail' display messages in the short ride I completed. Both occurred when I was at a complete stop.
What do I do now after uploading 4.02?

There are 9,182 rows of data in the ride file you attached.

The final row, row 9,182, has an error in the watts recorded. This can sometimes happen when the iBike is removed abruptly from the bike; the iBike detects a huge accelerometer spike and thinks there is a correspondingly huge watts spike.

When this single row of data is removed the ride file looks perfect.

The "0 km" header in the file is likely is caused by the same thing that caused your final data point to be incorrect. To close out a ride file with maximum certainty, do a "Trip Reset" at the end of your ride.

When you are standing at a complete stop it's possible that your legs will block the signal path between your speed sensor and your iBike. In this condition you may get a SPD FAIL, which is normal.

The moment you start riding again or your legs no longer block the signal path your iBike will pair automatically.

Note that it isn't critical for your iBike to be paired to your speed sensor when you are not moving.

I have now tried a piece of paper in the back of the wireless receiving units battery door, an upgrade to the 4.02 firmware, a hard reset of the all batteries in all remote sensors.
I still get a "spd fail" display upon coming to a stop. Interestingly enough, the speed display indicates 8.4 km/h before I get the 'spd fail' message. When I start moving again, it will pick up the speed signal and appear to work again.
I will take the bike for a proper ride for a duration and determine if the fault manifests itself repeatedly.

Again, the likely problem is that your leg is impeding the signal path between the speed sensor and the wireless mount. When you are pedaling your leg doesn't have enough time to block the signal.

You can try moving the speed sensor to a different location.

Adding paper to the battery compartment won't affect this issue at all.
