Speed Dropouts Mid-ride

Post by wazza15 »

This is not specifically a Gen 3 problem (as two of my friends have the same issue with their Gen 1's), but my setup is a Gen 3 upgrade. For a number of weeks now, I get speed dropping off the display after about 15-30 minutes of a ride, sometimes coming back for a little while, but never continuous. I took John Hamann's advice a while back and stuffed a little piece of folded up paper between the battery and the cover of the sensor, and while this appeared to work for a while with my older Gen 1, it never fully fixed it. In fact, I upgraded just to get PAST this and other niggling issues. Now my Gen 3 is consistently doing this to me, and two of my friends have basically decided to discard their Gen 1's for the same reason (my credibility is a bit shot with both of them for recommending iBike). Another friend has recently bought a Gen 3 but I am fearful he will suffer the same fate. For the guys like Travis and co, I have:
- changed batteries numerous times
- moved the sensor from chain stay to front fork
- replaced the head unit battery
None of these things have made a single bit of difference. I believe in the product, but what is my next move? I am based in Melbourne Australia, and don't really want to pack this setup off to the US unless absolutely have to.

You might want to try a different magnet (sometimes that can be the faulty part).
Also, make sure that the notch on the speed sensor is facing towards the wheel, and that the magnet passes directly over that notch. Sometimes these Ant+ Sport sensors can be a bit finicky with regards to picking up the magnet going past.

I had a similar issue and it ended up being that the wireless mount was faulty. I purchased a second mount, not cheap but worth it,then returned the bad mount and it was taken care of under warranty and didn't have to go without using my ibike.I'm not sure if you have a wireless mount but it's just a thought.

The other suggestion that comes up is to get a rare earth magnet to replace the standard magnet. You can find some at Radio Shack. Because they are stronger you should be able to widen the space, too.

Wazza

I recently sent a wireless mount from Brisbane back for repair, my postage was only about $8 and Velocomp had it back to me within 2 weeks. I thought that was pretty good service.

Many thanks for the helpful replies - esp to MdC in Ascot Vale (nice offer). I have tried packing in an even thicker piece of folded up paper, and it appears to have improved but not fixed the problem. I still had 0.5 km out of 65km that dropped out this morning, but it came back on when I reached down and tapped the speed sensor. Maybe this means the speed sensor has a loose wire? I am guessing that the stem mount is fine, and that a new speed sensor might be the solution. Cheers everyone.
