Isaac usb connection failures

Post by Brodirt »

Recently I got the dreaded connection failure.
I removed and reloaded everything and still the failure
I loaded all software onto a different computer and the Newton connected.
Then I attached the Newton to the original computer and it worked again with no further changes.
Since then it has been sporadically working/not working/working/not working.
I have used several different USB cables during this time as well so it is not the cable.
I thought the recent Isaac update would help solve, but the same thing is occurring.
Any ideas?

Try uninstalling the Isaac software and download the full version.

Uninstalling all of the Mac pieces requires that you go in to a few more locations to delete files. Within the folders (found in Applications) there will be some text files, one describes uninstalling the USB files. If you follow these, you will get a complete uninstall, not just what is obvious in the App folder.

This is getting crazy now.
I did the full line by line removal and a full re-install.
It worked perfectly.
I took the Newton on a ride, re-attached it to the USB cable and the error is back.

Is there a conflict with Golden Cheetah? I am running that as well but I never had a problem before.

Also, this started after I did the firmware upgrade.
Could that be the problem?

I run Golden Cheetah both v2.1 and beta 3 without any problems but on a PC.

I don't think the FW would have anything to do with connectivity. On the PC I can examine the Silicon Labs USB to UART Bridge. Can you see port settings, etc?

Im not that well versed in the inner workings of things.
I can run a system report and when I inspect the USB section there is nothing indicating the presence of the SI software.
I do not, however, know if this is normal.

I also tried the Newton on my daughters Mac and my wife's windows laptop and got the same failure.

This began after the firmware update and Golden Cheetah has also been crashing since then as well.
Installing the OSX update now. Maybe there will be a miraculous cure.

The problem is back again.
After a few days of not working, it began working again, and now it is has failed yet again.
I did full reinstall as well and it did not help.
It then did a full install on a clean hard drive I just installed on my laptop and the same failure occurred.
I have only 1 usb port on the laptop but swapped cables and the same error occurred. The Newton is charging from all usb ports and all cable that I have used.
I am at the point where I think it is a hardware issue with the Newton itself.
