iBike Died After Riding in Rain
iBike Died After Riding in Rain
So, I've been using an iAero without incident for 3 or 4 months now, but I did the collegiate national championship road race this past saturday and it stopped working mid-way through. It was lightly raining and cold, but certainly the conditions were not extreme. Since then, I've left it on my desk with the battery case open to try and dry it out. I went to put a new battery into it this morning and it still won't turn on. I then did a hard reset to try and recover it, but that didn't work either. Ideas?

Re: iBike Died After Riding in Rain
Same thing happened to me a few months ago. It took at least a week to dry out, and the screen only slowly became visible once again. Later, upon close examination, I noticed that there is a small gap between the edge of the clear plastic faceplate and the unit body, enough to collect some water from either rain or sweat. Also there is a slight, barely discernable buckle between the faceplate and the unit, probably enough to allow seepage into the unit itself. I just put a piece of clear packing tape over the faceplate after it had all dried out, and it has seemed fine since then.ghost wrote:So, I've been using an iAero without incident for 3 or 4 months now, but I did the collegiate national championship road race this past saturday and it stopped working mid-way through. Re: iBike Died After Riding in Rain
I raced in the rain as well last Saturday and my iAero stopped working 5 minutes into the race as soon as the skies opened up. There is definitely some space between the screen and the body of the ibike that allows water to creep its way in. I could flip it upside down and lightly press on the screen and water was coming out from that area. Is there anything that can be done about this? It did dry out within three days and is working fine now but I'd like it to actually still work in the rain. I know the RWS can help but when the iAero is taking on water from the screen area it is not going to last very long. Suggestions?

You can try putting a little bead of sealant around the outer edge of the screen, something to water proof that edge where water can seep in. I used some super glue on mine and that has worked pretty well, just be careful that you don't get it on the center of the screen or attach your finger in a semi-permanent manner to your iBike case.

I'm sorry, I love this thing and it works well. But seriously superglue ! Isn't the real question here why isn't the unit waterproof straight off the shelf. Cycling is an outdoor sport and we are going to get our fair share of harsh conditions. Units should be fully sealed yes?

Ron's unit should not have leaked. We have already contacted him by email and his unit will be repaired under warranty.

I had the same problem after getting caught in a down pour my gen iii iaero went blank. I dried it out and it works now, sometimes not always. It is very strange if I ride in am with high humidity the screen clouds up and the unit will usually shut off after an hour or so. My unit has already been back to ibike last fall and they said they had sealed it better. My powertap cpu was sitting right beside my ibike and took the same downpour with out missing a beat. At this point since almost all my rides are in the morning, I get about 20 mins of screen time before everything clouds up. Extremely frustrating!

Re: iBike Died After Riding in Rain
Try drying the iBike in a sealed ziplock bag with some silica gel, the little sachets you get with shoes etc. That should remove all moisture. Once done you may need to try and seal around the edge of the screen so water doesn't get in through there again.
Rice also works, just takes a little longer.

Hi, John. I road a 90-km race on Saturday that was peppered with short showers lasting several minutes. The display clouded up quickly and blurred up, then the unit failed to function shortly after the rain stopeed. I would like to have my unit repaired under warranty. I can send it to you but it will take a bit longer as I am in Manila, Philippines. Can you contact me at ressbautista@yahoo.com?
