Touring with the I bike

Post by klaus »

I just got home from a 6 day tour on the bike.

O did ride from Oberammergau (germany) to Montreux Switzerland. Following the Rhine river and then the Rhone. With 2 alpine passes : Oberalp and Furka

I did the ride on my Trike a catrike 700
2 bladders 3l water and .75l energy drink.
My radical side bags (weighing about 8kg 17.5lbs)

Total was 658km 409miles with a total climb of 8300m/27,230ft in a total of 35hours 10minutes
max slope of 17%, max speed downhill was 89/km/h 55mph

Hardest day was day 4 with 93km of climb from chur to the oberalp pass (with a few down hill sections) took me 7hours 37minutes
average speed was 12.2km/h 7.5mph max slope 16.4%
Total positive climb was 2370m 7775ft ,descent was -920m 3,018ft
On that day I averaged 120Watt for the whole ride to the summit. I excluded the final 10km to Andermatt since the descent did not require any strength except for my nerves.

The ibkie worked great for the major part. The biggest "issue" was that some of the section was not paved or worse and the IB was not able to adjust for the change in resistance but I fixed that after the ride.

On the long climbs loaded it was good to look at the W and see that I was still working hard even inf only moving at 4lm/h

The Ibike had some other minor issues
On 2 of the 6 day's the km indicated at then end of the day was way off. It is correct in the file once on the PC
I got a new HR band mine died after 3yers. It worked for half of the day's for the others it did report way too low GR rate. Or I have turned super human.
The IB memory was big enough to record the whole ride some free space left.
For longer touring rides (weeks or month it would be great to have a device where one can download the ride data offline with no PC required

I got about 1 hour of very light rain over the 6day's. I was always a hotel when the big downpour did hit.

The trike was fun to ride except for Germany where may bike trails are not paved. eventually some dirt ended where it should not have and that did slow down the trike quiet a bit. still have not found what the problem is but at 3% descent I am still getting slower so something is definitely not right. Hat only to walk 1 gravel hill. I could not get enough traction on my trike.
