Questions about mounts for rear wheel sensor... and VRK

Post by rruff »

So... it looks like the only stem mount is the wireless one... and the VRK needs to have the iBike on the stem to work right. Has anyone tried the VRK with a handlebar mount?

Also, is there no wired mount that has a wire long enough to reach the rear wheel?

I can see Velocomp pushing towards the more expensive options (wireless which can reach the rear wheel, iAero which doesn't need a VRK) but I'd really like to do this on the cheap... if possible. The standard iBike seems to be unnecessarily "limited".

Ron,

The VRK won't work well enough with the handlebar mount (I tried it).

I extended my original wired mount for rear wheel use using a cheap supermarket speedo sensor that I just cut off and spliced on to the ibike mount sensor cable (cost was £3 for the cheap speedo - tossed it but kept the battery). I recently had to do the same thing in Mallorca with my SRM speed sensor that got damaged in transit and somehow managed to find a speedo for 4 euros to sort the problem with a kitchen knife and some electrical tape before that start of a group ride  .

I still have my iBike on the handlebar without a VRK although I did upgrade to wireless some time ago. The only time I see the grey dropout from vibration is on downhill fliers where the watts are zero as I merely hold on for dear life. So the power numbers are not affected.

There are quite a few people that cut the wired sensor along the length of the wire and merely extended it to the back wheel. Any thin wire especially some old unused charger would work fine. Make sure you solder and tape or better yet shrink tube the connections.
