New Powerpod Setup with Lezyne Super GPS and Garmin Sensors

Post by the shovel »

I have a new PowerPod and want to set it up on my bike, but can't get it to pair.

I set up my Lezyne Super GPS (Ant+ compatible) with wireless Garmin speed and cadence sensors. It paired up easily and it pairs up quickly the next time it's started up.

Then, I charged up the PowerPod, mounted it, and put it into blinking green mode. I quickly activated the Garmin speed and cadence sensors by turning the crank and wheel, but the flashing green on the PowerPod stops flashing and returns to solid green. I repeated this about a dozen times, but no luck.

I wondered if I needed to pair the PowerPod first with my Lezyne, and tried to do so. With the Lezyne in "Power" and "pair" mode, and the PowerPod in blinking green, I activated the Garmin sensors. No go. The PowerPod goes back into steady green.

The Lezyne Super GPS registers both cadence and speed while stationary on my repair stand as soon as I turn the cranks and get the wheel moving, so we know the Garmin sensors work with the Lezyne.

Any tips about what to do next?

Thanks,

Solid green means the PP has paired with the sensors. See 4B to 4D :D

Solid green? Seriously? The documentation enclosed in my Powerpod says:

"Solid YELLOW light means successful pairing."

In addition to that, after my Powerpod displays a solid green light, my Lezyne Super GPS shows that it is searching for a power meter, but it never indicates that it has found one.

What instructions are you using? From where did you buy your PowerPod?

Immediately following a successful pairing, the PowerPod light will show solid green. After a few seconds the light will go out. If you click the button again the light will show solid yellow, meaning that it is ready for the five minute calibration ride.

If your PowerPod shows solid red when you click its button then it has not been paired successfully.

If your PowerPod flashes green when you click its button, but does not turn solid green, then it has not successfully found the speed sensor.

Do the following:

1) make sure your speed and cadence sensors are awake

2) with the bike at rest spin the speed sensor wheel and confirm on your bike computer that you seed speed in the window

3) press-hold the PP button for about 4 seconds, until it starts to flash green.

4) when the speed sensor is found, the light will turn solid green, indicating successful pairing

5) let the light go out, then click the button. it should show solid yellow

I'm using the instructions that came with my PowerPod which I bought online from ProBikeKit.ca. The box says it's from Skopre, Exclusive European Importer and Licensee.

Just so you know I'm not crazy or colour-blind . . .

How does that change the instructions given that I get a solid green after it finishes going through the pairing process (and doesn't pair)?

We are not crazy about these instructions. They attempt to show that, after successful pairing, the light is solid green. Then, subsequently, when you click the button it is solid yellow.

After pairing, when you click the button, what color is the light?

After attempting to pair the Powerpod with the peripherals of the Lezyne GPS computer, the light initially shows solid green, then after 10 or 15 seconds, it goes out. Each time I pressed the button after that, I pressed and held for 4 seconds thinking it had not successfully paired, and that I had to try again.

So just now, I went to my bike and tried turning on the Powerpod. The light would not come on. So I thought perhaps it had somehow run out of power overnight, and that I should recharge it. But when I plugged it into the USB cable, the charging light did not come on. Now it appears to be dead.

Is it possible the USB cable doesn't work? If it's a standard USB micro cable I can try charging it with another one. Shall I try that?

For reasons unknown, it has started to charge when I put it back on the USB cable after leaving it for several hours. Let's see what happens tomorrow when it is fully charged again.

OK, PowerPod charged up overnight.

I turned it on with no bike, peripherals or GPS nearby. It started blinking green, then after ~ 20 seconds turned solid red.

Then, I mounted it on my bike, activated the cadence and speed, and pressed the PowerPod button until it flashed green, continuing to turn the crank and spin the wheel with speed sensor.

The PowerPod switched to solid green after ~ 20 seconds.

I let it go off, then turned it back on again. The light on the PowerPod started blinking green.

What do I do next?

Your PP is not paired to your sensors--this is why the flashing green light is turning red (the instructions state that this means a failed pairing)

Do the following:

1) make sure your speed and cadence sensors are awake

2) Make sure your speed and cadence sensors are awake: with the bike at rest spin the speed sensor wheel and confirm on your bike computer that you see speed in the window

3) press-hold the PP button for about 4 seconds, until it starts to flash green. Release the button

4) when the speed sensor is found, the light will turn solid green, indicating successful pairing

5) let the light go out, then click the button. it should show solid yellow

Please let me know what happens at the end of each of these steps.

Sorry for the difficulty with this, but I think you missed part of my most recent post.

To repeat:

The PowerPod switched to solid green after ~ 20 seconds.

I let it go off, then turned it back on again. The light on the PowerPod started blinking green, not solid yellow.
It's not behaving as your instructions describe. It seems to signal that it has paired successfully, then doesn't go into calibration mode when restarted, but goes back into pairing mode.

I appreciate your patience.

I suggest the following:

1) press-hold the button for about 12 seconds, until the light stops flashing momentarily, then starts flashing again. This does a hard reset of the unit

2) do a new sensor pairing

3) please confirm that you are seeing speed and cadence signals in your bike computer window, when you spin the wheel and crank with the bike not moving

I did the reset as you suggested.

Then, I confirmed that the speed and cadence were showing in the Lezyne Super GPS with the bike on the repair stand and the wheel/cranks spinning. Not only does the head unit show speed and cadence readings, but the "paired" icons for both also show up in the display.

Then, I pressed and held the PowerPod button until it flashed green, and continued spinning the wheel and the crank.

After ~ 20 seconds, the PowerPod light turned to solid green.

I waited until the PowerPod light went out, then pressed the PowerPod button again. It came on flashing green.

I repeated all of the above. And then when I pressed the PowerPod button briefly after the "solid green, then no light" after pairing, it came on solid green. Not yellow - solid green.

Next?

I want to close the loop on this topic in case others have the same problem and need help.

Jhamann contacted me and we determined what the problem was. I bought my PowerPod online from "ProBikeKit.ca". It was delivered from Europe, and the instructions provided by the Europe licensee to velocomp were not the same as those provided by velocomp itself, and were misleading.

With John's help, I got my power pod working correctly. It had paired with all my sensors, but not my Lezyne Super GPS. I was unaware it had paired because I hadn't downloaded the Isaac software provided free by velocomp, but once I did, I found my ride files, and they showed the records of all my sensors and my power pod.

I returned the Lezyne Super GPS and bought a Garmin Edge 1000, which paired easily and quickly with my power pod and all my sensors. I'm using the power pod on all rides now, and getting a wealth of information from it.

Thanks, John, for all your help. This was an excellent customer service experience and I am delighted with the capabilities of the powerpod and the Isaac software.
