Confused over wind scaling

Post by DirtyDavey »

I've been reading the various threads on wind scaling but am now more confused than when I started.

So... yesterday I reset all the profiles in my PP and took it out for a calibration ride followed by in interval session. During the session, the power numbers were all over the place, on getting home and downloading the data it was obvious that something was wrong as the power profile just didn't look right, I could barely even make out the intervals from the easy sections.

Today I had another interval session planned, I did the set with power numbers all over the shop again so I decided to add in a little out and back section so I could check calibration.

I ran the ride into Issac, again the power profile looked way off. Running check calibration and let it do its thing and suddenly things look much better. The wind graph is more sensible and the power profile looks about right, the intervals are easy to spot. Power numbers look a little on the high side but then I'm a fairly small rider riding in the drops so I'm guessing that the aero assumptions are off and I can adjust that to suit.

My question though is that Issac set the wind scaling to 2.7, now everything I've read seems to suggest that's far too high and 1.4 would be a better setting for a PP mounted on the bars. Does 2.7 sound about right, is it way too high or have I just got my understanding of all this totally wrong?

Please post your ride file. That will make things much easier to address.

Thanks for taking a look, the ride's attached.

The out and back section is from around about 0:54:00 to about 01:01:10

Wind scaling depends on PowerPod position and angle.

Your correct factor is about 2.6. That is OK.

Tweaked profile is attached.
