PP inför available to Garmin Edge

Post by lorduintah »

What data from the Power Pod are currently available to capture on a Garmin Edge - say models 530, 830 or 1030?
1 - Power
2
3
4

Assuming your PP has FW 7.0+ (older PowerPods have FW 6.x)

Without our ConnectIQ app:

1. power
2. Whatever else your Garmin is set to capture

With our ConnectIQ app:

1. power
2. wind speed
3. slope
4. whatever else your Garmin is set to capture

And is that app on the Garmin Connect IQ site (with a name ??) or just buried in this forum as a zip file?

Instructions attached. You'll find the link in the instructions.

Note that CdA will not be updated continuously by PowerPod; CdA will be fixed at the default value from the PowerPod profile.

Done everything according to installation. Profile set to #4. Pairing all. Garmin does provide and recognize PowerPod (no battery status - yet.) Set up a data display in my road bike profile on the Garmin - none of the 4 data fields from the AeroPod program app display anything. So I get no wind or slope in the 5 data fields - not even the CdA shows up (and I understand it should be a fixed value since this is just a PowerPod. The PowerPod does show as a BLE in the sensor status of the Garmin 830. Power comes from the 5th data field.

Is it in the cards to create separate data fields as output and not the 2X2 - combination of the 4 values?

I kinda guess that this can become a never ending ever growing list of features for output, but since the iBike display is no longer part of the discussion, the availability to see on a bike computer is a desirable for real-time.

I will do some checking into this.

OK, I did some checking.

1) I used a PowerPod V3 with profile set to #1. Before pairing profile 1 was empty, so PPV3 status light was solid Red
2) I paired PPV3 to a speed sensor (no other sensors are required). Light turned solid green at end of pairing, then off. Light was solid yellow after clicking again (ready for cal ride). Only after speed sensor pairing will PPV3 transmit its power and CdA data.
3) I used a Garmin 520 with AeroPod ConnectIQ app installed (this app also works with PPV3).
4) I paired my Garmin to PPV3. Garmin picked-up PPV3 as power sensor, and speed sensor.
5) I selected the CdA screen on the Garmin.
6) I picked up the front wheel of the bike. Slope became positive, showing that slope information is being transmitted
7) I spun the front wheel of the bike (to simulate riding) then blew into the wind sensor. Wind speed changed, showing that wind speed is being transmitted
8) CdA and Time Advantage did not change
9) For battery status, I used Garmin "Settings/Sensors/Power Sensor/Sensor Details/About" Battery status is shown the About window.

Though I used profile 1 for my test, any profile should work. It looks to me that things are working just fine...

I will run the same and get back. Thanks.

Does the PP only show up as BLE, for the network? That is what mine display in the details. And so battery status is invalid.

Ahh...that might be the problem.

PP transmits CdA and battery data on ANT only. Power is transmitted simultaneously both on ANT and BLE.

Make sure your Garmin is receiving ANT sensor data.

The Garmin is getting Power. The only place that can be coming from is the PP.
Cadence as well as Speed sensors are both showing ANT. HRM is also ANT.

So somehow the Garmin is not getting both ANT from a lot of sensors and BLE from the PP, so I need a way to get the rest of the ANT data from PP.

OK - found the method -
1-Since BLE was found, disable that sensor.
2-add another sensor and let the Garmin continue the search - it should eventually find the ANT+ output from the PP. This will have a unique ID which is not the same as the BLE output from the PP.

After doing that the Garmin reported ANT+ for the PP and details showed battery = NEW, revision and a few other items - but still no output on any of the 4 elements in the AeroPod 2X2 setup.
