crazy offset

Post by larryt »

The offset on my Gen 3 has started to go crazy. After a reset the numbers will start to go up or down, sometimes as much as 75. This is inside out of any wind. Tried a hard reset. Any ideas?

Are you talking about the numbers on the wind offset screen?

When I go to the set offset screen to zero it out prior to a ride it shows a very high number. After zeroing it out the numbers start to slowly climb again up to another high number over the period of a few minutes. This happens indoors at room temp.

I'm no expert, but are you covering the wind port when you are trying to zero it out? Make sure the front wind port and the little bump in the back of the iBike aren't covered.

You haven't been riding in the rain by any chance? This is the exact same behaviour I have observed the couple of times I have been caught in heavy rain, took a couple of days for it to settle down again once it fully dried out.

Ugh, yes, me too on this. Rode in the rain and had ridiculous power (and speed/cadence - I don't understand why these go batty in the rain??), but today, the roads are completely dry, I had the battery out and the cover off all night, no moisture under the window or such, and the wind offset is bouncing around from -75/80 to +75/80. I do a reset, then it starts climbing all on its own if I jiggle the unit.

Any input from VC on this - ie, what's causing this problem, what can be done to recover as quickly as possible from it (wanting to ride the next day isn't all that unreasonable, is it? :-), and also, any idea why the speed/cadence go bad in the rain? These should be unaffected by rain in the port, right?

Also, if I puff or 'kiss' the wind port up front (ie, inhale vs exhale), should there be any sound of air entering/exiting the exit hole on the bottom? (doesn't seem to be presently, so I'm not sure if that's the normal state of things, or if perhaps its the sign of something obstructing the pathway?)

Appreciate any info - I'm due for an interval session tomorrow, and I'd sure like to know what the heck I'm producing during those. (Yes, I know, I've become way too dependent on this little thing... :-)

Thanks!

Had the same problem with wild #s on mine during and after a rain ride. The tilt was also off. Mine recovered in a day without taking the battery out, or doing anything else to dry it out... but I live in a dry climate.

Anyone have the same issue with the earlier units? I only used my Gen2 in the rain 3 times, but it seemed to work fine as soon as I got the water out of the wind port.

My guess at the moment is that water is getting inside via the battery opening, and possibly inside the mount as well... and this is shorting things out. Check your battery voltage, too.

yes it takes a couple of days for it to totally dry out. I sent my unit back to John for repair-as usual great support from them.

larryt - what type of repair was done, and does it seem to have resolved the 'losing its mind when its wet' problem?

Not really sure what they did. Maybe John can chime in. I would think it had to do with the seal on the battery access?

Nice sunny ride this morning so I can't tell if there is any improvement yet.
