Data Setup fault on hook/unhook from usb adaptor

I am getting occasional "Data Setup" resets of my Gen III iAero.
This will happen most often when I have finished an iBike computer session where I use the iBike software to Erase Data from the iAero. I will detach the adapter from the usb port. Then twist the iAero to detach it from the adapter. Then the iAero may enter "Data Setup" and clear the date and time settings and the tilt from the iAero (but not the profile). When this happens I will rehook the adapter and attach to the usb and tell the iBike software via the Device menu to update date and time. It may take two or three attempts to do a successful unhook.
This has happened for at least 6 months with all the latest versions of the iBike software and latest iAero firmware (with Garmin). It will sometimes (but rarely) happen when I connect the iAero to the usb adapter. It does not seem to be dependent on iAero battery level. Biggest trigger seems to be the iBike software data erase command to the iAero (but not always).
Could this be a failing adapter and is there a way to check the adapter?
