iPhone GPS & iBike

Post by Norm »

Anyone out there have a good solution for using GPS data from an iPhone with their iBike 2 or Training Peaks setup?

Can you download the GPS data from the iPhone? If so, it can be probably be matched to the iBike. iWonder?

I'm not aware of any GPS download capability from the iPhone. You'd have to have that information, along with clock information, in order to sync with the iBike.

Although, it could be possible with a Windows Mobile phone possibly. I have the Garmin GPS software on my Windows Mobile phone, and it has the ability to save a current route as a gpx file.

Then there is this

basically a micro SD ANT+ card, so you can get your iAero data on your cell phone in your pocket. The problem is the Garmin maps have to be stored on the micro SD card because of the size. I am not sure if this micro SD card has memory capacity or not, or if it's just a ANT+ sport card.

Of course, with an unlimited data plan, a custom built program for Windows Mobile, and an ANT+ sport card in the cell phone, we could broadcast live race power data from races to ibikesports webpage. Although I think if I give John one more project he might pull his hair out, ha ha.

There is a service available at http://www.instamapper.com that has an iPhone client. I haven't tried it yet, but the idea is that you crank up InstaMapper on the iPhone and go on your ride. Every 5 seconds or so, InstaMapper takes a GPS reading and sends it to your account at instamapper.com. At the end of the ride, you'd have to download some data, clean up the file, convert it to a useable format, and somehow marry it up to the iBike ride file. All in all, a bit cumbersome. In my mind, the uplink to the InstaMapper server is the weak link, especially in remote areas without decent Edge or 3G coverage.

There is an iPhone utility on the App Store/Navigation called Garafa, LLC (search for GPS in the App store and you will find it). It is $9.99, It claims to have GPX file output. I haven't tried it as I have a first gen iPhone without GPS....

Google also turned this up: http://www.igoapps.com/page/detail/MyTrack/2652/

If anyone generates a GPX file from their iphone, send it to me along with your ride file and I'll see if we can get them synched up. You can currently open GPX files for synching in 2.0.8, but it could be that other program generate GPX files that parse a little differently. Let me know if you have trouble.

If you are going to do this, set up the iphone to the fastest possible recording rate; 1 s has the best chance of working. Keep in mind that the GPS track will have to be good quality in order to sync, but it could work.

Travis,

What data points does iBike2 need to see in the GPX file? I tried out iMapMyRide on the iPhone, but I didn't see any timestamps in their GPX file, just lat / long values. When I saw that, I didn't even bother trying to sync it to my ride file.

Yep, it's hopeless if it don't record any time information. iBike3 has to be able to calculate the speed signal in order to sync.

Travis:

I have a Blackberry Storm and until just recently, the Instamapper app was not available for this device. They recently just came out with the app that works on the Storm. I downloaded it and it works great.

I was easily able to see my postion in real time by loggin in to a website. I can easily go in (post ride) and create a GPX file. Unable to open the GPX file so I don't know what all info it contains. I do know I was unable to synch it with my IB3 ride file (I have been regularly synching Garmin FR 305 GPX files with IB3 so I know it does work).

Attached both the ride file and the "GPX" file to see if anything can be done.

My goal is to ditch the Garmin for my ride. I use my Blackberry as a music player while riding as I like the security of having my phone in case of emergencies (I have it hooked up to some mini speakers as I don't think it's too safe to ride with headphones). In any case, the fewer devices the better, so if I can get this to work...yipppeeee!

It wouldn't let me post a GPX file so I changed the extension to CSV. If you download it, change it to GPX before working with the file...

[edit] I just opened the file with notepad...it looks as though there is a time stamp so I wonder why I am getting an error message with IB3? The error message is "File format not recognized"
