Use a separate speed sensor on your trainer wheel. I use a BLE Wahoo (for Zwift run on iPad) on my trainer, and separate hub speed sensors for other bikes. Then the profile with the Wahoo just needs to be in Trainer Mode, the other profiles do not.

Yay! I set up the outdoor and indoor profiles using John's procedure, where the trainer on / off is set after the relevant profile is active. After four alterations between outdoor / indoor rides, PP has switched itself correctly to either trainer on or trainer off as long as I activated the right profile. Didn't have to use the Trainer buttons at all after getting the correct setting assigned to the profiles.

Thanks for tracking this down. Thanks also for djaustin's suggestions about using a separate speed sensor on trainer wheel. I was only joking about PP detecting a wheel change, but maybe some combination of a magnet-less hub sensor on the wheels actually could do just that. I use the combo Wahoo Blue SC on the chain stay, with just the little magnets on each wheel. Unless I took that off (or vice-versa) every time I changed, seems like the PP wouldn't know which sensor to pair with even if I bought a separate hub sensor that went with trainer wheel. I use the trainer in same room as computer, so it's not a big deal to just tell the PP what's up via Isaac.
