play in Powerpod Mount

Post by wjwlitespeed »

My new Powerpod has a bit of play in it. The flat on the Powerpod does not sit evenly against the flat on the handlebar mount. This allows the Powerpod a small bit of fore-aft movement even with a tight mounting bolt.
I have 4 different mounts and it is the same on all of them so I assume the Powerpod itself is the issue. How will this impact the accuracy of the device? Is this typical or a defective case? I have attached a picture but it's hard to capture it well. For reference, the gap is smaller than the width of the white tag that comes with the handlebar mount.

I have the same play in mine. I'm interested in the response as well.

As a followup, I received the following advice from tech support and tightening the clamp with the allen screw worked as described. All's good for now.

Your PP should come to a stop in the mount, unless the plastic flat tab on your pod has been rounded off. If your PP is new then it's very unlikely that your PP plastic tabs have been rounded off.

The much more likely issue is that the aluminum tabs on your mount are spread out a bit too far, so much so that you can't compress the metal tabs sufficiently against the plastic tabs of the mount.

One solution is to use the 3mm screw and allen key, as the 3mm screw is a bit better for securing the pod to the mount. You can get much more compression with the allen key.

If you want to use your GoPro screw you can try this fix… Take the Pod out of the mount. Then, insert the 3mm screw, into the mount, and tighten the screw with the allen key… DO NOT put the pod in the mount for this… The object is to try and tighten the mount just a little bit, using the threads and screw… Basically like what a vice would do. As you tighten the 3mm screw you'll slightly bend the mount tabs. The tabs will stay in their slightly compressed position. After you've compressed the metal tabs, remove the 3mm screw and insert the PP into the mount. The squeezed-together tabs should be able to work successfully with the GoPro screw. If there is still too much play, then remove the PP and repeat the tab-squeezing process.

If you can manage to squeeze the tabs a bit closer by a few thousandths, then they will have a better chance of tightening the Pod,with the GoPro screw.

I've this play in my PP also, and to be fair, you mention the front to back movement in your instructions, and having to set the PP to the rear of the play for tightening!
so why is this play in there in the first place? surely a secure and tight fit is the ideal? i have a front mount k-edge aluminium mount, thats very strong and secure, as was the powerpod, initially, now it takes extreme tightening to keep the PP tight and stopped in position. yet the mount is not at fault, its as above, the powerpod tabs seemed designed to have this movement back to front....why????

I'm not sure what you are asking.
