What am I doing wrong?

Post by NYGiant »

Hello,

Overall I love my PowerPod since using it on Jan 1 of this year. Just a couple of issues I'd like some feedback on:

1. Sometimes after a rest stop on a group ride when I tap the power button and I'll see a solid green light, I don't get any power reading. I'll see either N/A watts or 0 watts. I'm pedaling at speed and know my speed/cadence sensors are awake confirmed by my readout on my head unit. Then I won't get any numbers for the rest of the ride rendering my avg power to a miniscule number for the overall ride. How can I avoid issues after the PowerPod automatically turns off? Is it getting confused by all the other sensors of other riders?

2. I'll mount my PowerPod on my 2nd bike using the same mount with another profile set up on Isaac with separate speed/cadence sensors whose ANT+ IDs are confirmed. The 2nd set of sensors are nowhere near the ones for my 1st bike when I'm out the door and turn on the PowerPod, but it will take several minutes before I get any reasonable power reading. Is this part of the unit switching to its other profile?

Thanks!

#1. The fact that you see the speed sensor and cadence in your head unit yes it means that they are awake BUT, they must be awake BEFORE you press the PP button. If that happens just tap the PP button again so it can pair those units.
One time after an stop I had the 0 watt power sign but I did not register anything else. My solutions was simple, I disable and enable the PP in the head unit and everything went OK. I have a similar problem with the varia radar that Garmin unit did not recognized and it was OK after disable enable the sensor in the head unit. BTW I am using Edge 820.
Of course when you get home if you have problems just look at Isaac and see if the sensor are recognized.

#2. The first 8 minutes of the ride PP recalibrate the unit. The recalibration is related to the angle of the PP. In general if you stop the ride the day before and you leave the bike against the wall and not do anything like putting it in a rack, remove the sensor etc while PP is on (20 minutes after you stop) then when you do a new ride the watts are almost normal, but like in your case you remove the sensor etc, then recalibration will be obvious and it will take less than 10 minutes to complete. What I do is after a ride, I do not do anything to the bike for 20-30 minutes then I clean etc. I do not care about the abnormal numbers for 8 minutes but, it mess up when i upload the numbers to Golden Cheetah mainly when there is a high spike in power. If this is the case I have to edit the file and remove the spike, not a big deal but another unnecessary step that I can avoid.

Helpful answer speedyvelo. Thank you

Velocomp;
I think part of the challenge for new and not so new users of PP, is the lack of ease in finding some of these basic answers / solutions to many questions asked - in the instructions or the PP FAQs available on website. (E.g. My battery charge question).

Which in turn, makes the process (of seeking quick answers, tips) somewhat more tedious than necessary - both for the PP owners, and I'm sure for Velocomp/John Hammon - as he has to likely repeat answers sometimes...

However - I must admit that John is EXTREMELY swift in replying to most queries re. PP - and, the PP - once set up correctly is an AWESOME product - and game changer - for many cyclists who never intended on paying 500 - 1000+ dollars for a PM.

Ty John, Ty Powerpod...

We appreciate your comments.

We try to answer the most-frequently-asked questions with the "Tips and Troubleshooting" document included with every PowerPod we ship. In fact, I think many of the questions asked on the forum are answered in the Tips document... :-)

I do agree that there are a lot of variations on fairly-standard questions, so if you folks have any suggestions on how we might organize the forum to make it easier to find answers, please let me know!

Regarding battery charge: this is not a number that we "transmit" externally. So, there is no way at present to interrogate your PP to determine its precise charge.
