Training Peaks Time Stamp -Merged files

Post by rogerthepilot »

Training Peaks online software allows for multiple devices to merge their data files.
I attempt to merge my iBike file with my Garmin Forerunner file.
Does the iBike have a 'time stamp' in the csv file?

Trianing Peaks text...."We simply evaluate the time-date stamp in the data file and align the files based on the timestamp. If the time samples of the units are at different rates, we do a linear interpolation to fit samples into the same sample rate as the highest sample rate between the two files. Make sure the clocks on your devices are synched. If the device file does not contain a time stamp, then we simply align based on first sample in each file. "

The two files will merge, but erroneously. One file ends up being longer than the other with a rest stop presumably provoking the error. I assume if I did not stop the first sample alignment that Training Peaks formulates...would make the merged files produce usuable data.

Depending on the software you use, take the file and export it as a tcx file or a gpx file. Then you can use the "merge" function of iB3 software to combine the two. You won't have to worry about the timestamps. If you have laps there are some hoops you'll have to jump through before you get it down pat.

Why do you want to merge your gps data with the iBike data? If you use SportTracks, you can merge there also, but that's an entirely different animal.

In short, I'd like to use ONE software product to record ALL my triahlon performance.

Training Peaks does what basically BeginnerTriathlete accomplishes.

Traning Peaks WKO+ has wonderful 'smoothing software' and helps me determine my 'watts per beat' visualizations.

iBike 3.0 for Windows does a good job of displaying data but I would like to have an effective and easy 'smoothing' function.

ORIGINAL QUESTION: was wether iBike has a time stamp value in the file or just a start time stamp? Can anyone tell me?

Many thanks, roger

I believe the iBike only has the start time stamp. I do know that if you take a break (say twenty minutes) during your ride, the iBike will not record that your overall time for being out was twenty minutes more than your ride time.

I do believe that there is a way for you to merge the Garmin data into the iBike file though. Fernando is probably the expert on the Garmin stuff. I've never actually ridden with one.

The iBike does not timestamp the data. It only records the time at the start of the activity and then records once per second or five seconds while moving.

If you look at the data based on distance instead of time in WKO does it show correctly?

If you are trying to merge a tcx file with the iBike file try doing the following before attempting the merge:
Use a text editor ( www.firstobject.com ) they have a great one called "foxe". Open the tcx file and do a search and replace. Search for "</Track><Track>" and replace with "". Exclude the quotes. You are replacing that text string with BLANK, IOW you are deleting all instances of the text string.

Then save the file and try merging. Let me know how you progress. If you want to upload the files here, I can take a look at them and see if I come up with a workable solution.

I wanted to get maximum use of Training Peak WKO+ with file merge, but I don't really need the process.

What is most important to me, is my ability to achieve the most watts per pound of body weight for an Ironman distance.

To refine the quest even more, I'm interested in my rate of change in watts per pound. I was hoping that would be included in iBike 3.0 for Windows.
